Trucking companies are becoming more and more environmentally conscious as well as fiscally conscious. These days the two go hand in hand with rising fuel costs. The SmartWay Transport Partnership as it pertains to the trucking industry is a program that provides the trucking industry with EPA certified vehicles that are equipped and outfitted at the point of sale with equipment that significantly reduces fuel usage and makes trucks operate more efficiently. Being a SmartWay partner not only identifies the trucking company or truck manufacturer as someone who cares about the future of the environment but it also shows the management of that company is searching for ways to operate more efficiently and to reduce overall costs.

A movement that several years ago was criticized as something put together by “environmentalist wackos ” has now become good business and well accepted in the transportation industry.

It used to be “don’t drink and drive.” That still holds true but now there is something on the road even more dangerous than a driver who has been drinking. Texting and Driving is a greater threat to other drivers than drinking and driving. This finding is according to research done by the British Transport Research Laboratory (TRL).

TRL has found that control of steering is practically zip while texting with 91% worse than normal steering control. Those who have been found to be smoking marijuana only had a 35% worse than normal steering ability. Reaction speeds are slower and drifting across lanes happens at a greater frequency. Following distances were also greatly compromised as focus is on the screen of the phone and not on the vehicle in front of the driver.

Then end conclusion of the study by the TRL is DONT TEXT AND DRIVE.

Con-Way Inc. trucking and logistics company reported on Wednesday a higher than expected net profit and indicated that the conditions of the U.S. trucking industry are improving.

Commenting on the quarter, Con-way President and CEO Douglas W. Stotlar said, “Our enterprise turned in commendable results despite a challenging business environment and the inflationary effect of unprecedented fuel prices.”

Con-way Freight, the company’s less-than-truckload (LTL) unit, posted solid revenue and yield gains, benefiting from improved market responsiveness and increasing customer recognition of its transit time performance advantage. “Targeted growth initiatives, implemented late last year at our LTL unit, continued to produce market share gains,” said Stotlar. “We also began to see indications of a more stable pricing environment in the quarter.”

During conversations with trucking executives earlier in the year, most expressed cautious optimism that the outlook for the year would improve slightly during the second half. Now that we’ve arrived, however, it’s difficult to gauge whether the sector has turned the corner.

Rising fuel costs are the single issue to blame and worse yet, it doesn’t look likely to dissipate anytime soon.

“It’s creating an incredible impact on customers’ transportation budgets,” says John Hickerson, Senior Vice President & Chief Marketing Office, FFE Transportation Services and President, American Eagle Lines and FFE Logistics (www.ffex.net). “There’s no denying it’s real. Our customers stop at the fuel pump on their way home and they experience it.”
