In today’s economy it seems layoffs are a daily event. Each evening the news gives the new numbers of job losses and to some it seems there is no end in sight. While job losses and workforce reductions increase across the board, there is one industry that is wide open and has thousands of openings. Over the road professional truck drivers are in high demand. Today’s truck driver is a professional driving a state of the art truck complete with GPS, onboard computer system, satellite communications and 650 horsepower. Today’s truck driver comes from all walks of life and they all have one thing in common; a CDL. Every truck driver has to have a commercial drivers license and that is the starting point for a new career.
Professional truck drivers can make a good income, with some specialties earning as much as $100,000 a year. Empty nesters are also finding second careers as team truck drivers. The kids are grown and out of college and now parents can get their CDL and see the country while delivering a truck load of goods and get paid to do it.
